Winter Kinusaiga
Exploring a Japanese Cultural Tradition through Fabric
Monday, November 09
5:30pm - 7:00pm
Discover a piece of the rich cultural heritage of Japan through the tradition of Kinusaiga.
Celebrate the winter season by exploring Kinusaiga, a traditional Japanese decorative practice that transforms fabric into intricate, quilt-like designs without sewing. Originating in Japan as a creative way to repurpose kimono silk, Kinusaiga reflects the Japanese values of resourcefulness, craftsmanship, and an appreciation for beauty in everyday materials.
Participants will learn about the cultural history and heritage of Kinusaiga, its connection to Japanese textile traditions, and how this art form has been preserved and adapted over time. Following the cultural introduction, attendees will create a winter-inspired Kinusaiga piece to take home, experiencing firsthand a traditional technique.
