Explore Black history in an immersive pop-up makerspace with hands-on art and creative stations inspired by influential figures. Led by local designer and illustrator Roxy Tate.
Join us for a vibrant, one-day interactive arts and learning experience designed for children ages 5–11 and their caregivers. Charles County resident Roxy Tate, leads this engaging program celebrating African American history as a year-round journey of creativity, courage, and discovery.
This pop-up educational makerspace invites families to rotate through four immersive, hands-on stations inspired by the legacies of:
“Culture for the Kids” aims to strengthen community connections, nurture early appreciation for the arts, and empower children to see themselves as active participants in history and storytelling. Each station pairs an interactive environment and photo opportunity with a guided art activity exploring themes of imagination, bravery, curiosity, and voice. Through storytelling, observation, creative making, and discussion, children connect history to their own ideas and experiences in meaningful, age-appropriate ways.
Parents and caregivers participate alongside their children, fostering intergenerational learning and conversation as small groups move through the stations with guidance from facilitators and volunteers. The program will be offered in two guided sessions: 10:00am–12:00pm and 1:00pm–3:00pm. Each child will leave with take-home art projects and educational prompts designed to extend the experience beyond the event and inspire continued exploration through books, history, and creative expression.
This is a free event. Registration is required to ensure enough supplies for everyone. Families registering multiple children should register each participant separately.
