Charles County Public Library is proud to host the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), a community-based initiative run by the Charles County Department of Health.
The Diabetes Prevention Program offers participants the tools and resources they need to:
- Lose weight through a combination of healthy eating and physical activity
- Increase physical activity with the goal of engaging in at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week
- Make lasting behavior changes that promote overall health and well-being
Program Features:
- Group-based support: Participants will join a small, supportive group led by a trained lifestyle coach.
- Educational sessions: The program includes 16 weekly sessions followed by monthly maintenance sessions for one year, focusing on strategies for healthy eating, increasing physical activity, and stress management.
- Personalized guidance: Participants will set individual goals and receive feedback tailored to their needs.
The DPP is suitable for adults who are at high risk for Type 2 diabetes, with risk factors including being overweight, having high blood pressure, a family history of diabetes, or being over 45 years old. This program has been shown to reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by more than 50%.
