Join the Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation and Charles County Public Library as we welcome artists Master Joo Hwan Lee and Dr. Hyun Dong Cho
This is a Drop in event, no registration is required.
Attendees will receive authentic Korean Food to eat during the event,
as well as a handcrafted Korean paper flower handcrafted by the artists.
Food and Flowers are available on a first come first serve basis. Limited availability, while supplies last.
The mission of the Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation is to expose Korean cultural art and heritage to citizens of the United States and to sustain the creative development of artists. With this mission, we have introduced selected Korean artworks in the major cultural cities of Korea and the United States for the last 18 years. 2022 marks the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and the United States and KACAF is pleased to celebrate this with special invitations of Korean master artists to exhibitions and workshops.
Master Joo Hwan Lee and Dr. Hyun Dong Cho will share their work and about the process behind the creation of it, in this exhibit with the theme of celebrational flowers. Joo Hwan Lee is a Korean traditional paper flower (Jihwa) master artist and is designated as a Gyunggi intangible cultural heritage No. 63, and also inscribed on the UNESCO’s representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2009. Dr. Hyun Dong Cho is a contemporary artist based in Korea. Dr. Cho studied Korean painting and uses traditional techniques with modern spatial composition to make his own creative visual language. He often uses nature such as flowers, butterflies, birds and fish with atypical hexahedrons and circles. He teaches Korean painting classes in several universities and has shown his works internationally.

Joo Hwan Lee is a traditional Korean Jihwa (paper flower) artist. Master Lee is designated as Gyeonggi intangible cultural heritage No. 63 Jihwajang function holder and also inscribed on the UNESCO’s representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2009. Lee was born in 1967 and became a monk when he was young. His dharma name is Seok Yong.
As a Buddhist cultivation, Seok Yong put all his efforts to make traditional paper flowers from the scratch and achieved the national master level. Lee received numerous prizes and recognitions including Korean National assembly citation, U.S. Member of Parliament award, etc.
He has held many invited exhibitions and taught Jihwa classes in Kyung Sung University and Kum Kang University in Korea.
Artist: Dr. Hyun Dong Cho
Chairman of Visual Arts Subcommittee, KACAF
Dr. Hyun Dong Cho was born in 1962 in Jeonbuk, South Korea and currently lives and works in Jeonbuk and Seoul. He received his Ph.D. of Sciences Art in Korean Painting from DanKook University, M.F.A. in Korean Painting from Wonkwang University and B.A. in Education from Wonkwang University.
Dr. Cho has had 57 solo exhibitions including Girin Museum (2020), Jeonbuk Museum of Art (2016) and many international exhibitions. In 2019, Cho received a special art achievement award by judges from Korean Council of Critics and his works were added to the collections of numerous museums such as Shinsegae Museum, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Museum, Wonkwang University Museum.
