Join us for a film celebrating the steps towards gender equality in the arts!

This video features a discussion of women’s changing roles in society, with a focus on how these changes are reflected in the arts. The program starts with an interview of Dr. Jean Baker, Professor Emerita of History at Goucher College. She describes the gains women have made since the 1800s in legal rights, access to education, and increased acceptance of women in leadership roles.

It has been said that "art imitates life,” and a similar move toward equality can be seen in the arts. For example, in dance although many women are performers, many of the prestigious positions behind the scenes have traditionally been held by men. These include studio owners, theater owners, choreographers, and coaches. Also, a few decades ago, it was unusual for women to learn how to lead in partnership dances. Now that is commonplace.

The DanceInTime “Women’s Team” reflects this movement toward gender equality. The group has performed many routines with some ladies leading and others following. Sometimes they even switch roles during a performance! For a bit of fun, the audience will watch some women’s performances, and guess which ladies are leading. The program closes with instruction on a few basic Salsa steps. Any women in the audience are welcome to try learning the leaders' footwork! This “Women Take The Lead” video program is sure to be empowering, educational, and fun!

BIOGRAPHY FOR BARBARA BERNSTEIN

DanceInTime is a Latin dance company that has taught and performed in the DC area and beyond for the past twenty years. Director Barbara Bernstein has produced shows for the Kennedy Center, the Capital One Arena, the DC Convention Center, World Bank Red Carpet Galas, and the Washington Nationals Baseball Park, etc. DanceInTime has been featured on the ABC News, the WTTG Morning News in DC & Baltimore, Telemundo, and the Voice of America. In addition, Bernstein has taught or performed with her team in Puerto Rico, Miami, NY, San Francisco, Dublin, London, and Vancouver.

Bernstein holds a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland's School of Education and has taught dance both privately and at local universities. These include the University of Maryland, American University, George Mason University, George Washington University, Peabody Institute of Music, and Prince Georges Community College. She also produced a short documentary film on the worldwide popularity of Cuban Salsa Dancing and a CD on "Rhythm and Timing" for dancers.
