The mission of the Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation is to expose Korean cultural art and heritage to citizens of the United States and to sustain the creative development of artists. With this mission, we have introduced selected Korean artworks in the major cultural cities of Korea and the United States for the last 18 years. 2022 marks the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and the United States and KACAF is pleased to celebrate this with special invitations of Korean master artists to exhibitions and workshops.
As part of this celebration, the Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation has brought Dr. Hwang to share her work with us. Dr. Hwang has devoted herself to researching the Joseon dynasty’s royal event recordings and reproduced them for 17 years. This is a rare opportunity to experience what is known as the best of UNESCO World Record Heritage. KACAF hopes these depictions of national ceremonies in the Joseon Dynasty will bring joy of celebrations during this great anniversary year.
Artist: Dr. Chee Seok Hwang -Chairman of Minhwa Subcommittee, KACAF
Dr. Chee Seok Hwang is an invited professor at Seoul Women's University and director of the Korea Palace Culture and Arts Center. She was born in Jinju in 1961 and attended schools in Busan and Seoul. She received a master's degree in education from Yonsei University and a doctorate in education from Sejong University. At Hongik University Art Lifelong Education Center, she learned the technique of royal painting from master Gyu-tae Song for 10 years. After participating in a royal event to reproduce the Uigwe of the Joseon Dynasty in 2005, she has devoted herself to do researching Uigwe and reproducing Banchado in Uigwe for 17 years. Her main achievement is to be a documentary writer who reinterprets the scenes of major national events at a glance, which can only be seen in fragments in books at museums. She has exhibited folk paintings, royal paintings, and documentary paintings in more than 50 domestic and international group exhibitions, as well as 10 invited solo exhibitions, including the Gallery of the Korean Cultural Center in New York, the Gallery of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, the National Hangeul Museum Gallery, Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum, and Heo Jun Museum.
“Uigwe Banchado”: When the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) had major national events such as wedding and funeral, Uigwe was an action report that records the progress of the event, a list of participants, costs, tools, and major scenes in writing and drawing. This is a unique record of the Joseon Dynasty and it is known as the best of UNESCO World Record Heritage (Memory of the World, MOW). Banchado was a blueprint drawing to prepare for an important national event in advance, and the order and title were engraved according to the position.
