This pre-recorded workshop will demonstrate the art of traditional Korean Calligraphy, with Artist Hyun Ki Lim!
Hangul was invented by King Sejong and his scholars in the 15th century, and was adopted as nonofficial writing throughout the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) until it emerged as contemporary forms in Modern Korea. This pre-recorded workshop will provide an overview of the history of Hangul calligraphy practices as well as an introduction to the principles and techniques.
In addition, participants will experience brush stroke techniques, composition, and essential skills that includes the "Four Noble Ones," the painting genre with plum blossoms, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum. They will also develop an understanding of the aesthetics of Korean calligraphy and Korean brush painting and its role in traditional Korean culture.
This program is presented in partnership with KACAF with artist, Hyun Ki Lim, presenting, and translated by Dr. Eunjung Lim.
Hyun Ki Lim is a Seoul based calligrapher and he is a Chairman of the Oriental Calligraphy Association in Korea. Lim graduated from the College of Business Administration, Youngnam University and completed the Graduate School of Education, Korea University. He studied calligraphy under Wonkok Kim, Kiseung.
Hyun Ki Lim has won many prizes including the 30th National Art Exhibition (1981), Dongah Fine Arts Festival (1983), and taught calligraphy at the College of Fine Arts, Suwon University.
Lim has exhibited his works internationally and published books; Theory on the Techniques of Calligraphy (1986) and Life and Arts of Calligraphy of Chang, Seodo (1981).
Dr. Eunjung Lim is the Dean of Korean Education and Culture a the Kongju National University (KNU). She earned her Ph.D. in International Relations from John HopkinsUniversity's School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). Before joining the KNU faculty, she taught at several universities, including Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan, and John Hopkins' SAIS.
